SNOW DAY !!!!!

Early Tuesday morning we were in a huge hurry. We had to leave early to get Gary to his early morning test on time. As we were leaving the house we noticed ice everywhere. We slowly and cautiously made it on time to all of our destinations. finally I arrived at the school with the kids. It was completely barren. We were a little early and at first I just thought that was the reason. Just as I was letting Lorin out of the car to make her way to class I got a call from Gary. No school, it was a snow day!!!!! Upon hearing the news my kids were beaming with joy. Thunderous shouts of happiness sounded from their small bodies. I don't think a kid could hear better news than that except for maybe "We are going to live at Disneyland." We went home, drank copious amounts of hot chocolate and did nothing constructive for the rest of the day. Then at around 9 pm we went outside to check the weather. There was snow everywhere!!! Again there were thunderous shouts of joy, but this time they came from parents as well as kids. Becaus of our snowless childhoods whenever Gary and I come in contact with the white stuff we revert about twenty years. Actually technically it was sleet but to us it is all the same. We quickly bundled ourselves up and poured outside.

Our cat hates cold weather even more than we do!!! She spent all of 5 seconds checking out the snow and then huddled by the front door until she could go inside.

Yes the kids are trying to sled down the drive way on a lid to a large plastic tote!! Didn't work too well.

The children covered every surface with snow angels.

We all went to bed much later than usual that night. A question lingered in the back of everyone's minds, "Will there be school tomorrow?" Lorin and Ethan were up much earlier than normal fully dressed including winter coats so they could be ready at a moments notice to play outside. School was once again canceled. It was only 12 degrees outside. This is what we saw when we opened the door that morning...

This was my first experience with a snow day. Snow day where I grew up consisted of someone taking the forty five minute drive to Idylwild to fill the back of their truck with snow then driving it down and dumping it on the lawn so everyone could play with it. Rather than sledding we bought blocks of ice and rode them down the side of a hill. Our family has only ever experienced school being canceled for an earthquake, a hurricane, or flooding. School being canceled because of snow is way better. Earthquakes and hurricanes aren't nearly as much fun as snow!!!

By noon almost all the snow was melted and life is slowly starting to get back to normal. It was sure fun while it lasted but I am glad it is not the norm around hear. I think snow would get really old really fast. Abilene usually gets one or two snow storms every year and then the snow melts the next day. That is just enough to have fun with and then when it gets annoying it just goes away. Perfect.
